Women's Heart Health: Prevention & Recognition

At Dignity Health, we understand that taking care of your heart is vital for your overall health. Women face unique heart disease risks, and our women's health experts are dedicated to offering guidance for lifelong cardiovascular health, empowering you to reduce your chances of a heart attack and live a healthier life.

Understanding Women's Heart Attack Symptoms

While many imagine a heart attack as intense chest pain, for women, signs can be different and subtle. Heart disease is the #1 killer of women, and delayed recognition of symptoms can delay life-saving care.

Women's Heart Attack Symptoms Often Include:

  • Unusual Fatigue: Extreme tiredness or weakness, even after rest.
  • Pain in Other Areas: Discomfort or aching in your jaw, neck, back, either arm, or stomach.
  • Shortness of Breath: Feeling breathless doing light activities, or even at rest, sometimes without chest pain.
  • Nausea or Indigestion: Often mistaken for an upset stomach, heartburn, or flu.
  • Lightheadedness or Dizziness: Feeling faint, unsteady, or suddenly dizzy.
While chest pain can still occur, it might feel like pressure, aching, or tightness rather than a sharp, crushing pain. It's crucial to remember that these heart attack signs in women can happen during rest, stress, or sleep, not just during physical exertion. Women often show blockages in smaller heart vessels, which can contribute to these varied symptoms. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.

Key Steps for Women to Prevent Heart Disease

Taking care of your heart means taking care of YOU. Proactive measures can significantly reduce your risk. Our Dignity Health women's health experts recommend the following preventive steps:

  • Know Your Numbers: Regularly check and understand your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and Body Mass Index (BMI).
  • Eat for Your Heart: Prioritize a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit processed foods, unhealthy saturated and trans fats, and added sugars.
  • Stay Active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise weekly, along with strength training activities.
  • Manage Stress: Find healthy coping mechanisms (yoga, meditation).
  • Quit Smoking & Limit Alcohol: Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. Limiting alcohol intake is also beneficial for cardiovascular health.
  • Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep nightly. Adequate rest supports overall bodily functions, including heart health.
  • Regular Check-ups: Ensure you have regular visits with your doctor to monitor your heart health, discuss your family history of heart disease, and address any concerns.
By taking these proactive measures, you empower yourself to live a longer, healthier life. Partner with our specialists at Dignity Health for personalized women's heart health care.

Meet the Desert Dreams Athletic Trainer

Emma Nettles Desert Dreams Athletic Trainer

Dignity Health of Arizona is proudly partnering with the Valley's new Women's soccer team, Desert Dreams F.C., as they join the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL). We share Desert Dreams F.C.'s commitment to excellence, teamwork, and community. We're proud to be their healthcare partner and support their success.

I'm an athletic trainer because I enjoy helping kids through pain, in the immediate on the field injuries and evaluations, and throughout the rehabilitation programs that help them recover from those injuries. I like seeing them improve and grow. Being able to be a part of that process is a gift. When I played sports in high school, I didn't have an athletic trainer and therefore, didn't have anyone to help me when I was injured. Now I can make sure that that doesn't happen wherever I work," Emma explains. Her favorite snack to enjoy during athletic events are goldfish crackers.

Let's strike out cancer

Early detection saves lives. Dignity Health and the Arizona Diamondbacks encourage you to get screened for breast, colon, lung, prostate, and skin cancer. A referral from your primary care provider may be needed for some screenings. Dignity Health offers convenient primary care locations throughout the Valley if you need a provider.

Breast and Cervical Cancer: Regular breast and cervical cancer screenings are vital for early detection. Mammograms are recommended for breast cancer screening, and Pap tests are recommended for cervical cancer screening. Talk to your healthcare provider to determine the best screening schedule for you.

Schedule your annual mammogram and or PAP/screening

Colon cancer is a serious disease, but it's also highly preventable with regular screening. The risk of colon cancer increases with age and family medical history of the disease. That’s why we recommend screening for everyone ages 45 and over. Screening can find polyps (abnormal growths) in the colon and rectum, which can be removed before they turn into cancer. It can also detect cancer early, when it's easier to treat.

To find out if you are a candidate for a Fast Track Colonoscopy, please call 602.825.2039 (Phoenix) or 480.728.7135 (East Valley)

Take our colorectal health questionnaire today to assess your risk and see where you stand.

A low-dose CT screening may be recommended for men and women, ages 50 to 77, who are current or former smokers with a 20 pack-year smoking history. If you meet these qualifications, talk to your physician about getting a referral for a lung cancer screening. For more information about the program or to make a self-referral, call Norton Thoracic Institute at (602) 926-0896.

Find out where your health stands:Take the Lung Cancer Health Questionnaire

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States, after skin cancer. It is the second leading cause of death from cancer in men.

Early detection is key when it comes to prostate cancer. Screening, through PSA testing and digital rectal exams, can help identify prostate cancer in its early stages, before symptoms develop. This allows for a wider range of treatment options and a better chance of successful outcomes. Talk to your doctor about prostate cancer screening and take proactive steps to protect your health.
