Breast cancer is the most common cancer for American women (1 in 8 lifetime risk), though it can affect men. Separately, 1 in 20 women will develop a gynecologic cancer. Early detection and screening are vital, particularly for HPV-related cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers.

Cervical cancer, in almost all cases, is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Vaccines that protect against infection with these types of HPV can greatly reduce the risk of cervical cancer. Having a Pap test to check for abnormal cells in the cervix or a test to check for HPV can find cells that may become abnormal and lead to cervical cancer. These cells can be treated before cancer forms.

Colon cancer is the third-most diagnosed cancer in America, and risk factors have been shown to increase as you get older. When found early, it can often be fully cured. Men and women should begin regular cancer screening at age 45 if you are at average risk.

Lung cancer is the second-most commonly diagnosed cancer in the U.S. among men and women, according to the American Cancer Society. Though smoking rates are down in this country, lung cancer continues to occur in significant numbers: more than 221,000 Americans are expected to be diagnosed with the disease this year.

Men face a significantly higher risk of both developing and dying from cancer. Our aim is to reduce this disparity by empowering our male patients with the knowledge and tools to proactively minimize their cancer risks.

Melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer, and it’s especially common here in sunny Arizona. And residents who are older, have fair skin, blue eyes, or a history of cancer are even more at risk. Ask your provider for more information about skin cancer screenings.

Our goal is early detection. The best prevention is routine screenings. We offer a range of advanced cancer screening options for early detection to help you take proactive steps for your health.
Breast Cancer: Annual screening mammograms are recommended for women ages 40 and older. Your provider may recommend a different screening schedule if you’re at higher risk: Schedule your annual mammogram
Colon Cancer: The risk of colon cancer increases with age and family medical history. We recommend screening for everyone ages 45 and over.Take our colorectal health questionnaire today to assess your risk and see where you stand: Colorectal Health Questionnaire
Lung Cancer: A low-dose CT screening for lung cancer may be recommended for men and women, ages 50 to 77, who are current or former smokers with a smoking history of 20 pack-years. A referral is needed: To schedule an appointment with a lung cancer specialist, call (602) 406-8222.
Prostate Cancer: Screenings are recommended for men ages 55 years and older, and those at high risk, particularly African-American men. Talk to your provider about the risks and benefits.
