Lung Cancer Screening & Management:

Norton Thoracic Institute invites eligible past and current smokers to consider our Lung Cancer Screening Program. This crucial initiative employs low-dose computed tomography (CT) to identify lung cancer at its earliest, most curable phase. For those who meet established guidelines, Medicare and most private insurance plans now provide coverage for this essential screening.

The efficacy of low-dose CT screening in reducing lung cancer mortality is scientifically affirmed. Data from the National Cancer Institute confirms a 20% reduction in lung cancer deaths through this screening. Studies further project that early detection and prompt treatment could collectively save over 70,000 American lives each year.

Advanced Esophageal Care for GERD:

Many people experience reflux episodes when the stomach’s content wash back up in the esophagus or mouth. In most people, these episodes are brief and do not cause ongoing problems. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when reflux occurs regularly, with increased frequency and duration of reflux episodes. Reflux causes bothersome symptoms. Most people do not develop serious problems from GERD, but it can cause severe esophageal injury in some people, and the condition should not be ignored. Long-term, untreated GERD can cause these conditions:

    • Ulcers in the esophagus
    • Strictures (blockages) in the esophagus caused by scar tissue
    • Pneumonia, caused by inhalation of gastric juice into the lungs, sometimes causing permanent lung damage
    • Esophageal cancer
    • Barrett’s esophagus, a condition in which the cells of the esophagus are replaced by an abnormal type of cell. These abnormal cells can become cancerous.

GERD has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, affecting an estimated 20% of adults, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases. The good news is that you may be able to control GERD through lifestyle and diet changes, and that effective treatments are available for more difficult cases.

Interventional Pulmonology:

At Norton Thoracic Institute, our interventional pulmonary and advanced diagnostics team focuses on precise, minimally invasive approaches for diagnosing and treating suspected malignancy, airway disorders, and pleural diseases. Patients benefit from the collaborative expertise of our dedicated professionals, including board-certified physicians, physician assistants, nurses, and social workers, who are committed to delivering comprehensive, patient-centered care.

We provide advanced pleural care and utilize numerous state-of-the-art bronchoscopy procedures for precise diagnosis and effective treatment. We believe informed patients are key partners in their care, and we encourage you to learn about your condition to work collaboratively with us.

Advanced Bronchoscopy & Interventional Procedures:

Our specialists employ a wide range of minimally invasive techniques for complex thoracic needs, including:

  • Airway Management: Procedures such as Airway Stenosis Management (using balloons and rigid bronchoscopes for narrowing relief) and Airway Stent Placement (for sustained airway support, with patient education on stent care).
  • Asthma & COPD Interventions: Bronchial Thermoplasty for severe persistent asthma, and Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction for emphysema using FDA-approved endobronchial valves to improve breathing and exercise tolerance.
  • Diagnostic Tools: Advanced diagnostics like Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy (3D mapping for peripheral nodules), Endobronchial Ultrasound Bronchoscopy (EBUS) for real-time biopsy and lung cancer staging (standard of care), Flexible Bronchoscopy for direct examination and treatment of lung diseases (e.g., chronic cough, bleeding), and Peripheral Ultrasound Bronchoscopy for precise nodule localization.
  • Tumor & Lesion Treatment: Tumor Destruction via specialized laser, argon plasma coagulation, or electrocautery to minimize bleeding.
  • Foreign Body Removal: Utilizing various bronchoscopy equipment tailored to the aspirated object.
  • Pleural & Post-Surgical Care: Pleuroscopy/Thoracoscopy for diagnosis and treatment of pleural diseases with minimal incision. Endobronchial Valve Placement for post-surgical air leaks, and Tunneled Pleural Catheter Placement for recurrent malignant pleural effusion, empowering patients for home management. Ultrasound-Guided Chest Tube Placement for infections or lung collapse.
  • Specialized Treatments: Whole Lung Lavage for alveolar proteinosis. Transbronchial Cryobiopsy as an alternative to surgical lung biopsy for interstitial lung disease, providing larger, high-quality samples.
  • Rigid & Robotic Bronchoscopy: Performed by expertly trained pulmonary specialists, featuring Rigid Bronchoscopy for complex airway diseases and central tumors (with bleeding control capabilities), and Robotic-Assisted Bronchoscopy for ultra-thin catheter access to all lung segments with integrated vision.

Advanced Thoracic Robotic Surgery:

The Thoracic Surgeons at Norton Thoracic Institute offer advanced, minimally invasive thoracic surgery, including procedures performed with robotics. Each patient undergoes a thorough evaluation to determine the most appropriate and individualized surgical approach.

Robotic Surgery Advantages:
This robotic approach allows surgeons enhanced precision through 3D vision, articulating instruments, and full control over the surgical tools and camera. This technology leads to benefits such as improved lymph node dissection, reduced tissue trauma and blood loss, less post-operative pain, faster recovery times (shorter ICU and hospital stays), and minimal scarring. The Xi system also provides advanced assessment of tissue blood flow.
Common Robotic Procedures Include: Robotic capabilities are utilized across various complex thoracic procedures, including esophageal surgeries (from hernias to esophagectomies), lung resections (such as lobectomies), and the removal of mediastinal and chest wall tumors.
Patient Suitability: Deciding if robotic surgery is the right option involves considering the cancer's location and advancement, the patient's overall health and surgical tolerance, and a comparison with other minimally invasive or conventional open surgical techniques. Not all patients are candidates for robotic surgery.
Accreditation and Safety: Norton Thoracic Institute located at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center is proud to be an accredited SRC Center of Excellence in robotic surgery, reflecting a commitment to the safest and highest-quality care, exceeding clinical benchmarks and guidelines.
Important Considerations: While offering significant advantages, robotic surgery, like all surgical procedures, carries inherent risks, including infection and other potential complications, similar to conventional surgery. Patients are encouraged to discuss the benefits, risks, and comparisons with alternative treatment options with their doctor.
