CommonSpirit Health's Virtually Integrated CareSM (VIC) Professional Practice Model has been selected as an Academy Edge Runner by the American Academy of Nursing. This recognition underscores CommonSpirit's nursing team's innovative work in revolutionizing patient care.
With its "all in one" computer technology, the VIC model brings virtual nursing and language services directly to the patient's bedside. By assisting in many aspects of patient care, such as admission, education, discharge and more, VIC is helping reduce lengths of stay and improve the quality of care, all while addressing the industry-wide nursing shortage and lightening the load for our bedside nurses.

About the Edge Runner Award The American Academy of Nursing’s Edge Runner Awards are evidence-based, nurse-designed models that demonstrate significant clinical, financial, community and policy outcomes that are sustainable and can be replicated. The award recognizes nurses’ ingenuity and collaboration in developing new methods to provide care and promote health equity. The academy selected six innovative models of care that were honored at the 2024 Health Policy Conference on Oct. 31-Nov. 2, in Washington, DC. |
VIC is a powerful example of how we can use technology to enhance patient care and support our nursing teams, while addressing many of the challenges facing the health care industry. “By freeing bedside nurses from administrative tasks, we are fostering an environment where patients receive the personalized attention they deserve. By balancing workloads and leveraging technology we improve patient outcomes and satisfaction while enhancing the work environment for nurses,” said Linda Goodwin, System Senior Vice President Nursing Transformation, CNIO. “By fostering a collaborative and supportive culture, our model sets a high standard for compassionate, efficient and high-quality care.
The VIC program is one of CommonSpirit's nursing strategies that are focused on developing ministry-wide best practices, policies and innovative care models. “True innovation in health care requires vision, courage and tenacity. It also takes a deep connection and understanding of both those who give and those who receive health care services,” said Kathy Sanford, SEVP, CNO. “The virtually integrated model is due to the determination of nurses and their teams who persisted to improve both care and the work experiences of caregivers.”
The VIC model was developed by Kathy Sanford; Linda Goodwin; Diane Murphy, System Vice President Nursing Transformation Operations; and Julie Tuel, System Vice President Virtual Care Nursing Practice Transformation. Congratulations to our exceptional nursing team for this well-deserved recognition!
VIC is currently in place in 10 hospitals in the Central, South and Northwest Regions. In fiscal year 2025, this model will expand across CommonSpirit.
