Lung cancer remains one of the leading causes of death, but early detection can make all the difference. If you have a history of smoking, the Lung Cancer Screening Program at Norton Thoracic Institute is designed specifically for you. Annual low-dose CT lung cancer screening for high risk individuals is covered by Medicare and insurance.

A low-dose CT is a quick, painless X-ray that uses a small amount of radiation to create detailed images of your lungs. While any radiation exposure carries a small risk, the benefit of finding lung cancer early, when it’s most treatable, far outweighs that risk. With the help of low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans, this program aims to catch lung cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. Research from the National Cancer Institute indicates that these CT scans have contributed to a 20% reduction in lung cancer-related deaths. Another study estimated that early detection and treatment of lung cancer could save more than 70,000 lives every year in the United States.

senior-couple-diverse-water.jpgBreast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Breast (MRI) is a noninvasive test that uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and internal body structures. MRI does not use radiation/x-rays. Breast MRI provides valuable information about many breast conditions that other imaging modalities can't provide.

Breast ultrasound (high definition): High-definition breast ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic tool designed specifically for breast tissue. Using sound waves and high-definition technology, breast ultrasound gathers extremely clear images of the breast. High-definition breast ultrasound is used as a follow up to learn more about suspicious findings detected during a mammogram. It's also used to screen people who are at high risk for breast cancer.

Calcium Scoring: Calcium scoring is a non-invasive way to detect the presence, location and extent of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries. Calcified plaque stems from a build-up of fat and other substances in the arteries. This can signal atherosclerosis, also called coronary artery disease.

CT Scan: Using x-rays and a computer, CT scans produce images of a cross-section of the body to: evaluate the body's internal organs, detect broken bones and look at major blood vessels in the brain and body.

Digital Mammography: Digital mammography uses x-rays to produce an electronic image of the breast that is stored as a computer file. The x-ray image makes it possible to detect tumors that cannot be felt during a breast exam. This digital information can be enhanced, magnified or manipulated for further evaluation.

DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry): DEXA is a quick, painless and non-invasive exam. Using a small amount of radiation, DEXA measures bone loss in the lower or lumbar spine and the hips. No radiation remains in the body following a DEXA exam. DEXA is used to diagnose osteoporosis and determine an individual's risk for fractures due to osteoporosis.

Fluoroscopy: Radiologists create real time, high-resolution images for more accurate diagnoses during fluoroscopy. Fluoroscopy is used to examine the upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) tracts as well as the urinary tract.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): MRI uses a large magnet, radio waves and a computer to produce detailed, cross sectional images of the human body with x-rays. MRI is known for producing high-quality images of the body's soft-tissues.

Ultrasound: Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the body. These images help physicians evaluate symptoms such as pain, swelling and infection as well as to examine many of the body's internal organs.

X-rays and General Radiology: An x-ray is a diagnostic test that uses a small amount of radiation to create digital images of structures within the body.

From Diabetes Struggle to Active Grandmom: Kathy’s 70-pound journey

bari-kathy-1.jpgKathy Misiewics, 77, struggled with diabetes and weighed 200 pounds before her sleeve gastrectomy at Dignity Health. Six years later, she's maintained a 70+ pound weight loss, enjoying travel and shopping.

"Shopping for clothes is fun again," says the retired nurse. While she still has diabetes, her blood sugar, A1C, and blood pressure are now normal. Kathy credits consistent check-ups with the Dignity Health team, exercise, and healthy eating for her success.

Her motivation extended beyond health: "I wanted to be alive to enjoy our family." This great-grandmother's journey highlights renewed vitality and family connection.

From 468 Pounds to 10Ks: Sams' Journey of Transformation

Bari-male-patient-1.pngSamuel Martinez, 29, once weighed 468 pounds, making simple tasks like walking to his front door a battle. Diagnosed with sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and pre-diabetes even after an initial 130-pound weight loss, he sought a lasting change.

In September 2023, Martinez underwent duodenal switch surgery at Dignity Health. Just two years later, the 6-foot Martinez is a lean 200 pounds and an enthusiastic runner, regularly competing in 5K and 10K races. He shares,

"Before the surgery, I could barely walk from my car to my front door. Now, I can run a mile in 12 minutes." Beyond the physical transformation, Martinez's quarterly meetings with the program's dietician and the support team have reshaped his relationship with food. This holistic approach helped him reverse his pre-diabetic status. He praises the program's ongoing commitment, stating, "They don’t abandon you — and they hold you accountable." This comprehensive care propelled Samuel from immobility to an active, healthy life.
